What TDEE activity multipliers actually mean

The 1.2 to 1.9 multipliers every calculator uses come from no published paper. Where they came from, what the research says, and how to choose one.

Every TDEE calculator works the same way. Estimate basal metabolic rate, then multiply by a number between 1.2 and 1.9 depending on how active you say you are. The multiplier is presented as settled science, usually with a citation to Harris-Benedict or Mifflin-St Jeor.

Those papers do not contain those numbers.

This is worth being direct about, because it changes how much confidence the output deserves. The activity multiplier is the largest source of error in a calorie estimate, and it is the part with the weakest published basis.

Where the numbers came from

The set — 1.2 sedentary, 1.375 lightly active, 1.55 moderately active, 1.725 very active, 1.9 extra active — spread through fitness literature and calculator code from the 1990s onward. It is a convention. Trace any given calculator’s citation back far enough and you generally find another calculator.

The concept underneath is real and well studied. It is called physical activity level, or PAL: the ratio of total energy expenditure to basal metabolic rate. If you burn 2,400 kcal a day and your BMR is 1,600, your PAL is 1.5. Researchers measure it properly using doubly labelled water, which tracks the disappearance of two isotopes from your body over a week or two and yields total energy expenditure in free-living conditions to within a few per cent.

So PAL is measurable, and it has been measured in thousands of people. What does not exist is a paper establishing that “exercise 3 to 5 days a week” corresponds specifically to 1.55.

What the published frameworks actually say

Two authoritative sources define PAL bands. Neither matches the conventional five-point scale exactly.

The Institute of Medicine, in the 2005 Dietary Reference Intakes, defines four categories from doubly labelled water data:

The FAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation, in its 2004 report on human energy requirements, uses three lifestyle bands:

Compare these to the conventional multipliers and something jumps out. The conventional “sedentary” value of 1.2 sits inside the IOM sedentary band, which starts at 1.0 — but it falls below the FAO floor of 1.40 entirely. FAO’s view is that a genuinely sedentary adult still lands around 1.40.

Both frameworks are legitimate; they define their categories differently and drew on different populations. But the disagreement tells you something useful: the low end of the conventional scale is the least trustworthy part of it.

The TDEE calculator tags each multiplier with the IOM band it falls into, so you can see where the number you picked sits against measured data rather than against a label somebody wrote.

The labels are the problem

“Moderately active — exercise 3 to 5 days a week” sounds precise. It is not, because it leaves out the thing that varies most.

Structured exercise is a surprisingly small part of most people’s daily energy expenditure. An hour of moderate exercise might add 400 kcal. Meanwhile the difference between someone who sits at a desk and drives everywhere, and someone who is on their feet all day and walks to work, can be 700 kcal or more — with no exercise involved at all.

That component has a name: non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT. It covers walking, fidgeting, standing, posture, everything that is movement but not training. It varies enormously between individuals, and studies of overfeeding have found differences of several hundred kilocalories per day in how much people spontaneously increase NEAT in response to eating more.

So two people who both select “exercise 3 to 5 days a week” can have genuinely different total expenditure, because one of them is a postal worker and the other works from home. The multiplier cannot see the difference, and the label does not ask.

How to choose, given all that

Three practical suggestions.

Pick for a typical week, not your best one. People select the level matching the week they intend to have. Choose the one that describes the last month honestly, including the weeks you did not train.

When in doubt, go one lower. Most people overestimate activity, and the error compounds: a multiplier one step too high on a 1,700 kcal BMR is roughly 300 extra kcal in the target. Starting slightly low and adjusting upward when weight does not move is more forgiving than the reverse.

Consider skipping it entirely. If your weight has been stable for a month or more, your maintenance intake is whatever you have been eating. That is a direct measurement of your actual TDEE, in your actual life, including your actual NEAT. It beats any equation. The calculator is most useful when you have no such baseline — starting out, or after a long period of change.

Do not double-count exercise

This is the most common practical error, and it is easy to make.

If you select “moderately active” because you train four times a week, the multiplier already includes that training. Adding a figure from the calories burned calculator on top counts the same exercise twice, and inflates your target by several hundred kilocalories.

Pick one approach:

  • Select an activity level that includes your training, and do not add workout calories on top. Simpler, and what most people should do.
  • Or select “sedentary”, establishing your baseline without exercise, and add each session’s energy separately. More precise if you train irregularly, and considerably more bookkeeping.

Mixing them is what produces a target that seems generous and does not work.

What the number is for

A TDEE estimate is a hypothesis, not a measurement. It says: given equations fitted to other people, someone with your dimensions and your reported activity probably uses about this much.

Test it. Eat at that level for two to three weeks — long enough for water weight fluctuation to average out, which is covered in why scale weight fluctuates — and watch what happens. If weight is stable, the estimate was good. If it moves, adjust by 100 to 200 kcal and wait another fortnight.

After one round of that, you have something better than any calculator can give you: a maintenance figure measured on the only person it has to be right about.
